“Of course I have a few minutes to talk to you. Having time is more important to me than making a few dollars.”     “When did you realize that?”     “When I got burnt out like everybody else in this country—working too much and chasing the American Dream. What is the American Dream? The more you work, the less time you have. The money you make, what are you gonna spend it on? Stupid things. The aspect of café culture or having a long lunch in the afternoon or siestas doesn’t really exist here. If you want to get together with somebody, you have to schedule an appointment. It’s a very different way of life. Is it healthier? I don’t know. It’s not for everybody. It’s not for me. My downtime is my real value. I make enough to get by and the rest is ‘live while you can.’     “Some people love their jobs. They identify with what they do. I don’t. I like to think that I’m a little more than just what I do. But here, the first thing people ask you, after your name, is ‘What do you do?’ I usually tell them, ‘I’m talking to you. How about you?’ Just to make them think a little bit. I think it puts you in a box. I can tell you I’m a lawyer or a businessman or an artist. Did that change who I am or the conversation we are having? And if that’s important to you, then I don’t think we have much to say to each other. You go somewhere else in the world, and that’s one of the last things people usually ask you.”
