Note to Self: Never Invite My Mother to the Grammy’s
Snippets from a discussion I had with my mother after she got to see the premiere of NBC’s “The Voice.” I did not get a chance to catch it, so I grilled her about it instead.
David: So mom, what did you think about the show?
Mom: Oh! At first I thought: “They’re just trying to be like those American Idol people,” but I was wrong. I mean, they are, but they’re different. They focus on the voices of the contestants, you see. There are auditions, but it’s not like Idol. All the terrible singers have been weeded out from the very start.
David: How was it overall?
Mom: I was surprised by how much I liked it! I loved the singing. They had some very talented people performing. And Christina Aguilera was one of the judges!
David: Who else was a judge?
Mom: Three other men? I don’t know them. Well, they said one of them is a country star. I sort of remember the other two…
David: I heard Cee Lo Green was going to be a judge.
Mom: Who?
David: You know! He sings that song- “I see you drive ‘round town with the girl I love and I’m like Efff-yooou”
Mom: Oh! Yes. Yes. The Gwyneth song. The song that Gwyneth sang on Glee!
David: Yes, mom. The Gwyneth song.
Mom: Don’t you patronize me! Yes, he was on there. And there was another young man too. He sings in a band…Mango 15 or Mirage Something. His name was, uh, Adam. Very picky. He didn’t want to work with anyone at first.
David: Wait. Um, Adam…was it Adam Levine?
Mom: Yes, that’s it!
David: From…Maroon 5?
Mom: Maroon 5? Is THAT the band’s name? What did I think it was called?
David: (laughs) Mango 25 or Mirage 15…something. Look, don’t worry about it. The number had a five in it. You weren’t that far off.
Mom: Oh God….I’m mixing things up so that they sound like other things! (thoughtful pause) I’m turning into your father!
