“My initial pitch to Joss was that Willow should snap her fingers and these aggressive, heterosexual frat boys were going to start making out with each other. And in fact, find themselves unable to stop kissing each other. And here’s where we realize that Joss’ brain really is better than the rest of us.

He came back and said I see where you’re going with this, but I don’t think I want to do it that way…. And he gave me two reasons: One was that he didn’t want, ever, to present the idea that a person could just snap their fingers and change their sexuality. And two, he never wanted to make it look like a boy kissing another boy should be a punishment

So, that was when I realized that not only was I in the hands of a master who knew what he was doing and had a very good head on his shoulders, but also, um, Joss Whedon being straight is pretty much the biggest waste of all.

He would have made such a great gay guy.”

(Buffy Writer, “Smashed” Season 6 Episode 9 DVD Audio Commentary)

THIS IS WHY I LOVE Joss Whedon! Well, it’s one of the many reasons why I love him, but it’s one of the more personal ones. When I listened to this DVD commentary, I realized I needed to be a writer. I wanted to be able to construct provocative narrative and dynamic characters like Joss, yes, but I also wanted to be keenly aware of the far-reaching influence narrative has: The way that even seemingly subtle changes to a story can create messages that shape the very society in which we live

He’s just so funny and smart and thoughtful and thought-provoking. GAH! I can’t wait for The Avengers already!!!
