An F.Y.E. was closing down its doors at the mall today and I scored a couple of great CD deals in the process. The markdowns were pretty extensive, but F.Y.E. already naturally overcharges by at least 30% compared to other retailers, so an actual bargain requires some digging.
Music is always a goldmine when these kinds of stores go under because the general public has a limited aural palate. I was surprised though, because even really popular albums (like the latest efforts from Beyonce and Rihanna) were both plentiful, even when reduced by 50%.
Shocker! I thought Queen Bey would be the first to go.
Anyhoot, here are my gems (clockwise from top right)
1. Chulahoma - The Black Keys
I don’t consider myself a particularly amorous person, but The Black Keys somehow always get me, er, how to say this? Excited? Aroused? Look, it’s music to f*ck to, alright? There! I said it. There’s just something about the moaning lyrics and the dirty basslines. Damn girl, listen to dat bass!
2. Running on Empty - Jackson Browne
As Lane Kim from Gilmore Girls once said, there’s waaay more to Jackson Browne than just “Doctor My Eyes.” This CD is actually a live concert album, and while the quality is a little shakey at times, the music is well worth it. Think of it as a HQ bootleg. P.S. Listen to “The Road” and be forever changed. It’s an auto-include on my road trip-themed playlist.
3. Leave Your Sleep - Natalie Merchant
Natalie’s latest offering is a five-year project that took poems / children’s nursery rhymes and set them to music. It’s a treasure trove of folklore with a wide range of influences. My luckiest find (and not just because of the price that I paid)!
4. Prolonging the Magic - Cake
Cake is one of those bands that manages to dazzle me every time I hear them. I only own one album and a few singles, but I wanted to take another dip in their pool. Reviews for this album were all promising. I sampled “Let Me Go” on a lark and didn’t look back!
R.I.P., F.Y.E. but thanks for the tunes!

abundleofletters asked: Let me just say - I LOVE your "Cake for Breakfast" post! It is insightful in the best ways, and your style of writing contributes to that. I first posted that picture because my mother strongly encourages me to eat cake for breakfast after my birthday has come and gone each year (and I do so with gusto). And just in case anyone is curious, the tote is Kate Spade!

Whenever I write stuff like that, I always try to keep my expectations low, figuring that no one will read the post…much less think it’s insightful :D! I really appreciate your feedback. Thank you so so much! <3

And thanks for the designer shout out too! It was so fanciful, I wondered if maybe it was photoshopped or something!

It’s really cool that your mom encouraged you to eat your birthday cake for breakfast. I think I may resolve to do the same thing me-self (for good luck).

Do you make wishes on the tips of pie slices before you eat them? I read about that in a David Sedaris book and now it’s become a ritual. For every slice of pie I eat, sweet or savory, I make sure to make a wish on the tip before I fork off a piece!

Is this a real thing?!!
Either way, it’s a philosophy to which I sincerely subscribe.
See, a while back, my friend gave me the Out of This World Carmen Sandiego album as a gag gift. One of the songs included is actually called “Cake for Breakfast.” It’s a jaunty tune that riffs on the idea that all kids secretly want to eat cake for breakfast. The song takes place in the head of a person who is dreaming about the pieces of leftover birthday cake that remain in his refrigerator. (Link to song by clicking sample lyrics below)

Can you live your life completely?
Can you do it, wild and sweetly?
Can you dream about cake for breakfast?
Two big pieces just for me.

Although I might be digging a bit for the meaning, I think that the song can be read as something more than an endorsement of confectionery consumption.
The idea is that “cake for breakfast” is not just a sweet indulgence that we can occasionally engage in, but an ideal to which we can strive. You dream about eating cake for breakfast because it challenges the status quo. It’s a violation of one of the standards set by the authority most of us come to know first in our young lives: “Mother”.
“Cake for breakfast” isn’t just unusual, it’s unorthodox! Symbolically, it verges on the heretical. And yet, it’s so easy a rule to overthrow, so easy a desire to satiate (it’s not cocaine, people) and it’s so liberating to do just once in your life. It makes you wonder what the big deal was in the first place. That’s because the admonishment, the guilt, the conflict, the confusion…they don’t exist in reality so much as they abide in your head.
Dreaming about “cake for breakfast” means that your willing to dare yourself to do what you previously thought was impossible. It means that you’re not afraid to visualize a life that departs from your current reality. Better than that, it’s realizing how easy a goal like “cake for breakfast” is to achieve once you silence your inhibitions / your self-doubt / your inner critics… and just REACH for your f*cking dreams already.
